Our Support Center
Overview of Autism

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is described as a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life.

Diagnosis of Autism

Diagnosing autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be difficult because there is no medical test, like a blood test, to diagnose the disorder. Doctors look at the child's developmental history and behavior to make a diagnosis. ASD can sometimes be detected at 18 months of age or younger. We meet diagnostic criteria for ASD

Treatment of Autism

The most effective interventions available are behavioral therapies based on applied behavioral analysis (ABA). There are many different types of ABA to choose from based on your child's strengths and needs.Other treatments include:Behavioral management therapy, Cognitive behavior therapy, Early intervention, Educational and school-based therapies, Joint attention therapy, Medication treatment, Nutritional therapy & Occupational therapy.

Autism Assessment Process

Once you have made a booking we will ask you to complete a Case History form which will gain information on your child and family background. We will also ask you to provide details of your child’s pre-school/school and we will contact them to complete a questionnaire. We will organise a time with you to complete a standardised parent interview (ADI-R or DISCO). This is a key part of the ASD assessment which takes the form of a phone call with our clinician

Visit Preparation

Many individuals with ASD have heightened preferences for routines and difficulties navigating unfamiliar settings. Preparing before visiting the doctor often helps reduce fears and anxieties, improving the chance of a successful visit. The Autism Friendly Initiative’s Healthcare Social Stories can help alot.
